Winemaking and Viticulture

Much of the unique character of this wine is developed in the vineyard, low yielding spur-pruned vines with only the best of the Shiraz grapes are selected and picked in the cool of the night to ensure fruit is delivered at temperatures less than 20 degrees. Fermentation is on skins in open top fermenters with subsequent maturation in French oak barrels for up to 22 months prior to bottling.

All the fruit is sourced solely from Shaw Wines Murrumbateman vineyard, an area renowned for production of premium cool climate wines. Stelvin closures are used for freshness and to ensure long term quality.

The cool-climate Canberra district is renowned for producing a softer style of Shiraz that goes beautifully with food, and this one is similarly delicious and approachable. We enjoyed it with an Asian salad and were initially worried that it might be overshadowed by the chilli and other strong flavours in the dish, but it stood up to the task and was a revelation for our guests, who were unfamiliar with Canberra wine. A real beauty.

The 2013 Merriman was a merlot and this is the first shiraz to get the accolade. It has 14 per cent alcohol, is deep garnet and shows earthy aromas. Lifted, ripe blackberry flavour comes through on the front palate, elements of rhubarb, cloves, licorice and savoury oak integrate on the middle palate and chalky tannins home in at the finish. It’s at shawvineyards.com.au, the Isabel Drive, Murrumbateman cellar door and in bottle shops.

Medium to deep red colour with a purple tinge, and a ripe nose showing lots of biscuity oak. There are dried herb and earthy nuances, too. The wine is lively and medium to full-bodied, intense and lively with energetic acidity and a long, nervy finish.

This dual gold medal winner pays homage to George Merriman who championed the production of world-class wool in the cool climate Murrumbateman area. Grapes for this wine hail from part of his original holding.
Exquisitely balanced wine delivering waves of spicy flavours.

Some cool climate class with a kick in the booty. A wine you just want to sit down and drink.
Red fruits and red berries with a classic undertow of peppery spice get things under way. A bit earthy through the mid palate, it arrives with elegance before fattening out with dark berry fruits taking up residence. Oak plays a neat cameo – nice. The silky feels in the mouth with a edge factor about it keep getting my attention. Long hang time to finish, that gentle spice hum gives more than enough incentive to go back for more.
Long term cellaring potential but it’s good to go now.
    93/100 – Very good

Each year owner Graeme Shaw takes a particularly close look at the Merlot, Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon off his historic Estate, and decides just which of these three is the finest – and bottles it under a “Reserve Merriman” label in honour of the pioneering George.
Graeme’s just released his 2014 choice, which was the Shiraz from that year and which has wonderful balance on the palate between ripe berry fruits and varietal pepper and spiciness… and which is actually the first Shiraz he’s released under the Shaw Vineyard Estate “Reserve Merriman” label.
At $65 indulge it on its own, or with BBQ’d beef or spicy Asian or Mexican dishes.

Carries red fruit, spice, delicate oak – in tune with itself.
Medium bodied, smooth, silken-treaded, elegant. Not the most complex, but composed, I feel drawn to that word: elegant – again. Has a sense of flow, finesse and flavour. Spike of cola derived flavour towards the finish, then a long tail.
    Good wine. 91

This is the ‘best of’ of Shaw Vineyard Estate each year. A reserve wine that shape-shifts according to what turned out best from a new release season.
Spicy oak, raw cedar, red berries, cola, lavender scents. Slides in the palate on glossy texture, soft tannins, sweet fruit and finishes with chalky-earthiness and pepper. It’s elegant, seamless, has great flow and feel. It’s not particularly complex, but it has a fine feel; oak is the fancy feature here, albeit relatively subtle. Smart-ish.
