Tasting Notes

Winemaking and Viticulture

Much of the unique character of this wine is developed in the vineyard, low yielding spur-pruned vines with fruit harvested in the cool of the night to ensure fruit is delivered at temperatures less than 20 degrees. Fermentation is on skins in open top fermenters with subsequent maturation in French oak barrels for up to 22 months prior to bottling.

All the fruit is sourced solely from Shaw Wines Murrumbateman vineyard, an area renowned for production of premium cool climate wines. Stelvin closures are used for freshness and to ensure long term quality.

Rich black fruits, red grapes and spiced plums with added depth from lingering, velvety vanilla. Bronze Medal.

Fleshy, red-fruited aromas of cherry, redcurrant, cedar and spice. Bright and crunchy flavours, cherry cranberry, satsuma plum, mocha and dried herbs. The tannins are firm and savoury and provide shape and structure and the acidity has a snappiness to it. Youthful, mid-weight and smart drinking.
    Drink to 2031. 90/100 points.

The team at Shaw Wines know what it takes to consistently produce high quality and award-winning cool climate wines. They have a focus on producing the finest quality fruit they can, so much so that at vintage time, if any of the varietal fruit is not spot-on, then they will pass on production of that wine for that year. In my view, the 70 acres of vines are really starting to stamp the pedal to the metal. Shaw Wines produce one of the best Merlots racing around and their current release – the Shaw Wines Merlot 2019 – is this week’s “swirl”.
This Merlot is a deeply attractive, dark crimson colour with bright flashes of purple. A swirl reveals to me aromas of mulberries, dark plums and roasted red capsicum sprinkled with a good shake of classic cool climate white pepper spice. On the palate, it’s smooth and mellow with fleshy ripe plum and dark berry fruit flavours with a dollop of vanilla and fine tannins leading to a lingering, mouth coating finish.
We enjoyed our bottle with a Chateau Lello special – panko and parmesan crumbed, free range chicken breast schnitzel with a mushroom gravy, but would go fantastically well with any barbecued meat or game dish.

Full-bodied character with gripping tannins and aromas of mint, eucalyptus, blackcurrants and blueberries. Fruity palate with notes of blackcurrants, blueberries and juicy plums and a bright finish. Awarded Silver Medal.
