Tasting Notes

Winemaking and Viticulture

This Semillon showcases the best fruit from 2019 vintage.Much of the unique character of this wine is developed in the vineyard, low yielding spur-pruned vines with fruit harvested in the cool of the night to ensure fruit is delivered at temperatures less than 20 degrees. The fruit is then lightly pressed and drained and only the free run juice is used to produce this elegant wine.

All the fruit is sourced solely from Shaw Wines Murrumbateman vineyard, an area renowned for production of premium cool climate wines Stelvin closures are used for freshness and to ensure long term quality.

Night-harvested, only free-run juice used. The essence of the wine comes from the lemon/lime sherbet and crisp acidity. The residual sugar can’t be isolated, the balance coming from the perfectly ripened fruit. Interesting wine. 11.5% alc. 94 points.

Pale lemon-flesh-yellow colour. No coincidence, perhaps, that the nose also screams of lemons: zest and rind, fresh juice too. There’s more lime to the palate, rind mainly – it’s still painfully youthful, with dried herb sinew wrestling with its acidity. Needs time but promises much.

I’m usually prepared to be disappointed with semillons from outside the Hunter, but this one is something else. It is from Graeme and Ann Shaw’s Canberra wine region winery in the NSW village of Murrumbateman.
It carries the Reserve tag that the Shaws award each year to what they consider their best-performing grape variety. This 2019 is pale straw and displays ginger blossom scents and deliciously elegant lime front-palate flavour. The middle palate brings forth green apple, lemon curd and mineral characters and slatey acid refreshes at the finish. It’s available on shawwines.com.au, the Isabel Drive, Murrumbateman, cellar door and wine shops. It will cellar handsomely for eight years and be a perfect foil for Hiramasa kingfish sashimi.
    5 stars.
